The IFRC's Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia works in support of 53 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Through its Country Cluster Support Teams and Country Offices, it provides coordination, financial and technical support for disaster operations and longer-term development programmes throughout the region.

European Migration

An unprecedented number of migrants arrived in Europe since 2015; it is estimated that more than 1.4 million arrived by sea and 60,000 by land during this period. For those travelling by boat, most arrived in Greece and Italy, with at least 1.03 million arriving in Greece and 360,000 in Italy. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people have lost their lives crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa and Turkey.

Turkey

The conflict in Syria has entered its sixth year, and has created an overwhelming and enduring humanitarian crisis displacing to date over five million Syrian people into neighbouring countries and other regions around the world. As of the end of December 2016, there were some 2.8 million displaced Syrian people in Turkey in protection camps and urban areas.

Ukraine

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine stays active, continues to claim lives of thousands of people and is resulting in damage to critical civilian infrastructure in Luhansk and Donetsk Regions. The protracted nature of displacement, poorly furnished accommodation facilities and high living costs remain challenges to cope with. The lack of employment opportunities increases the vulnerabilities of the displaced population and forces some IDPs to return to insecure areas.

DREFs and Minor Emergencies

Hungary Hailstorm

On 21 June 2017, hailstorm and heavy rains hit several parts of Hungary. The village of Megyaszó in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County and villages scattered around the county capital Kecskemét in Bács-Kiskun County were particularly affected, with roofs, windows and vegetable gardens destroyed or greatly damaged.

Tajikistan: Floods

Heavy rains and strong winds on 26 June 2017 lasting for an hour (between approx. 16:30-17:30) have resulted in a mudflow in Amondara village. About 140 households (700 people) have been affected. Six houses have been totally destroyed, and ten houses heavily damaged. A total of 124 houses have been filled by mud. The affected population has lost their livelihoods, livestock and home properties and critical social infrastructure.

Forest Fires

Deadly forest fires are burning across the southern Mediterranean, from Portugal to Montenegro. The Red Cross is actively responding in multiple countries.
